why DSA?

because a BETTER WORLD is POSSIBLE

“Individually, we are too small to make a meaningful difference. DSA helps me feel more connected to the community and society as a whole. I believe DSA can play a role in bringing a cause and sense of belonging to those who feel left out or behind.”

—Hwan-Joon C, Charlotte Metro DSA member

“It’s important to engage people and take action to organize systems in their communities, to fight the established systems and show others that a better way exists.”

—Sheana B, Charlotte Metro DSA member

From housing and healthcare to education and the environment, capitalism degrades civil society by placing profit above people and planet. Meanwhile, the working majority of us are divided along lines of race, gender, sexuality, and more. In the media, “justice” and “equality” sound like buzzwords as the civil-rights advances of the past century are slowly stripped away in Congress and the Supreme Court. As the world seems to burn around us, it’s only natural to ask, “What can I possibly do about this?”

“Radical change is needed and the scope of that change is not possible without a large force capable of organizing it. DSA’s democratic structure can serve as a model for how a broader democratic society can operate.”

—Brian J, Charlotte Metro DSA member

The Democratic Socialists of America is a national political organization funded and run democratically by us, its members. We believe that working people should run the economy democratically to meet the needs of everyone, not to make profits for a few. Therefore, we seek to build a mass movement in the United States, to transfer power from the ruling elite to the working class, to gain freedom and democratic control over all aspects of our society!

“Being a member of DSA has taught me many important organizing skills and lessons, and I know that I have a support system of people who I can turn to if I need any assistance or guidance. Also, roses are pretty.”

—Colben H, Charlotte Metro DSA member

A world where we can all flourish—not just survive—is possible. A world where we can answer the fundamental questions of our lives with the input of all—an actual democracy run by “we the people”—is possible.
